An outstanding and very different graphic novel, that reminds us of Philip K. Dick's work. Based on Robert Silverberg's bestselling novel about the effects of interstellar colonialism and the quest for transcendence. Ex-lieutenant Eddie Gundersen returns to Belzagor, where he had left behind his youthful illusions, the love of his life and his shameful past as a colonizer. He finds the planet returned to its two intelligent species, the woman he left behind and another who has hired him to lead her and her husband to forbidden secret ceremonies. Moderate nudity.
Taking the lead on a scientific expedition to the borders of the indigenous lands, Gundersen must face his own demons and settle the score with a planet which still has hidden secrets. The beautiful woman that he left behind has married his worst enemy from those early days there, while that same enemy is pursuing the addictive drugs found on the planet and the ultimate ceremony, a part of the alien's secret.
And there's the lovely wife of the couple who've hired him, an anthropologist who is quickly becoming estranged from her husband. She finds comfort in the arms of Gunderson, furthing complicating the already complex journey with his ex-lover along.
And the two species on the planet? Fully cognizant and aware, Gunderson is in contsant conversation with them, as they try to help him find himself and lose the demons that have haunted him from his first time on the planet. It's a fascinating novel, with excellent artwork, well-detailed aliens, appealing adult themes, and a story like no other. We liked this a lot, and couldn't put it down once we started it.

- Silverberg is one of the top names in science fiction, with countless awards, Hugos, Nebulas, etc. Not since the 1980s DC graphic novels have I seen a Silverberg story adapted to comics. And this is a very good, very unusual one. Nearly impossible to describe...it's about earth colonizing a distant planet with two species that we exploit, but know little about. Two men are destined to learn much more, one for selfish purposes, the other far more altruistic but still naïve. This also has some fine art, adult themes, and it sure makes me think of the metaphysical kind of science fiction that Philip K. Dick is known for.
