Closeout Price! Collects #6-10, 1947. Recommended. Written and drawn by Dick Briefer. Dick Briefer's Frankenstein character, created for Prize Comics, was comic's first ongoing horror series. But unlike every other adaptation, Briefer made the "monster" the star of a comedy strip, with friends who are witches, mummies and strange beings...it's a spoof on horror stories. In later issues Frankenstein became a true monster, meting out violent justice with nary a second thought. But in these early stories, it's all good clean fun as the monster tries to cope with a crazy, surreal world that he doesn't quite understand.

Briefer was a prolific artist during the Golden Age, but this is the series he's best known for.

It began in Prize Comics and ran for years before it spun off into its own title, which also ran for more than thirty issues. Splitting the stories between two schools--humor and horror--Briefer's tales are absorbing and unsettling in equal parts.

Noted horror authority Don Glut provides an ample introduction, "Merry Had a Little Monster." And in it you'll find images from everything from Marvel's 1947 Blonde Phantom (she meets Frankenstein), to a wonderul 1970s painting by Briefer, recreating the cover of Prize Comics #7. Glut looks at both film and comics horror and puts this little gem of comics into the proper perspective.
