Closeout Price! Limited, 300! Collects #16-21, 1948-52. Highly Recommended. Written and drawn by Dick Briefer. Alright--now we get to the stories I like best. With issue #18, Frankenstein took a swing to the dark side. No more humor, it was now time for dark, gothic stories of mayhem and murder. Franky spares no one if he's po'ed or trying to protect anything from dumb critters to little girls, and the bad guys get done in in lovely pre-code fashion. Dick Briefer tightens up his artwork to work in this pure horror vein, and these issues from now on are twisted and fun.

Frankenstein is hounded again and again into the corner, where his survival skills (buildings burn down around him, he's swept down a wild river, he's shot and stabbed and hung) keep him coming back for more.

Writer/Artist Dick Briefer's Frankenstein is widely regarded as being America's first ongoing horror series. Indeed, it was Briefer's work that probably caused the creature to be actually referred to as Frankenstein instead of the nameless monstrosity from Shelley's novel. Briefer's tales are absorbing and unsettling in equal parts.
