Recommended. By Gustave Flaubert and Philippe Druillet. In the third century BC, mercenaries of Carthage rose against their rulers. And two barbarian clan chiefs, Matho and Narr'Havas, fell in love with the beautiful and ethereal Salammbo, daughter of Hamilcar of Carthage. Based on the 19th century novel by Flaubert, Salammbo is appropriated and recontextualised by Druillet in this masterwork of psychedelic metaphysical panorama. Including many orginal covers from the first serializations and French album appearances that may have never before been collected.

Druillet splices the identity of the novel's Matho into his favorite character, Lone Sloane, and works his intoxicatingl magic on a literary classic, reinvigorating it from the inside out with his own transcendent storytelling. It's amazing work, crammed with wonderful detail, panoramas of action, wonderful bright coloring and even some erotic art as he incorporates real-life nudes into the tale.

Druillet was first inspired by the work of Jack Kirby but given the bigger dimensions of French albums and the far better printing, he took his work to a entirely new level. You will see design and characters that look like Moebius, because it was Druillet (and Valerian's creators) who began the entire French sci-fi era, and Moebius was himself influenced by Druillet's work.

Druillet dedicated this to director David Lean (Lawrence of Arabia) and Stanley Kubrick (2001), "my favorite images."
