Collects #1-6, 1956-57. Highly Recommended. By Steve Ditko, Vince Alascia et al. The collection cover here has a great invention by Ditko, showing things in another dimension pulling a passerby out of our world, in "From All Our Darkrooms." In the old days, all printing was made by making negatives of the art, and here Ditko uses exactly that process to create this other dimension. PS Artbooks liked the idea so much, they've printed five of the best covers inside, full sized, and in this same negative aspect. We've shown one here. It's very cool to have this different take on the covers.

Back in the post-EC days of the mid-to-late 1950's and early '60's, Charlton was doing some darned good comics, thanks to ex-EC artists but most especially to Steve Ditko, before he made the move to Marvel. Beginning with issue #3, this was all Steve Ditko, cover to cover, through #6. In the first two issues things were more pure sci-fi, with artwork by Mastroserio, Dick Giordano (who of course moved to DC and eventually became editor-in-chief there), Bill Molno and Charles Nicolas, who was the creator back in the early 1940s of The Blue Beetle.

This first volume in PS's Silver Age Classics sets out to reprint the whole run, all 16 issues, the way it should be done. Just take a look at those covers---classic, gorgeous Ditko! Ditko continues to be a major part of this series. with two to four stories in each issue. In the next volume, the scarce 15 cent issues will be collected, #7 and #8. Matt Baker even shows up in #14!

The Ditko stories are very, very much in the same vein as the ones he began doing with Stan Lee just a couple years later. "The Thing From Below" offers us an ancient beast, an enormous sea serpent, who is roused from the ocean bottom by nothing less than an atomic bomb test. "Night They Learned the Truth" begins looking like a mob after Dr. Frankenstein and his monster, but it ends up more like Jules Verne's Off on a Comet. "Fly Dutchman” has two sailors lost at sea in their dinghy, encountering the famous ghost ship, manned by a ghostly crew...all in wonderful Ditko fashion.
