- Full Description
From renowned letterer and comic expert Ferran Delgado, in collaboration with the Kirby Museum, comes this oversized deluxe book compiling for the first time ever the complete Sunday pages of Jack Kirby and Wally Wood's Sky Masters of the Space Force. Presented in meticulously remastered color along with dozens of never-before-reprinted panels often dropped from the page! And more extras, like twenty original color guides by Kirby himself, a huge section with original art, rare pieces and essays by experts. Oversized. Signed and dated by Ferran Delgado.
And there's more, Dick Ayers' own take on working with Jack on the later pages, after Wally Wood left the strip. And a fun essay, "Mother of all What If" by Patrick Ford, speculating if Kirby had stayed working at DC Comics. The reason he left was this Sky Masters strip, since more was promised to him by the editors at DC, who started the strip off, than what was delivered so he returned to Marvel in anger.
There's also pencilled art from a discarded Challengers of the Unknown page from issue #4, which ended up being redone as a repurposed daily strip, Surf Hunters, and the very fine original art from that is here too, a complete Sunday and six dailies...and it's BEAUTIFUL WORK. All with Wally Wood pencilling, too! This is the largest compilation of Surf Hunters, the unsold daily strip, ever collected.
There are several pages of Sky Masters Sunday pages, from the full sized (or nearly so) original artwork. Sky Masters appeared in THREE different formats, depending what paper it appeared in. This shows how each one was adapted, adding or discarding the extra panels, and also adding or leaving off the "Scrapbook" strip, a bottom feature that few people have ever seen before. I haven't. All of these special strips, similar to the Medieval Castle strips Hal Foster once added to Prince Valiant pages, are included here. You can see an example of one in our first scan.
And there's more: promotional pieces that appeared in newspapers about the strip, and about Kirby, how it was produced in full color, all of Jack's work from 1958-59 from before, during and after the strip, at first DC and then Marvel; the contract that brought the whole gig crashing down for Jack. And Comic Book Creator editor Jon Cooke provides a highly detailed, 8-page fully illustrated introduction, "The Story Behind Sky Masters." I can't wait to read it!
Note: We sold out our first stock of the Sundays in Spring of 2018, then took backorders for dozens more copies, selling out again when they arrived, unable to get as many as we wanted. Then it was gone. Although entirely in English, this was produced and printed in Spain. The publisher says they cannot economically do a new printing, so this is another top notch book, which are few and far between, that hasn’t reached its full audience, and (I predict) will be sought after as scarce or rare. The publisher contacted us to say he had 20 copies put aside that he would sell to us at nearly twice the original cover price. He’s been offering the occasional copy on EBay. So we jumped at the chance to have a few more, and offer them here...with the added signature by Ferran, at our request.
