El Topo was a bandit without limits, a man with no moral compass, but his journey through the arid west eventually brought him enlightenment. That's the tale in the famous 1970 cult film El Topo. This entirely new sequel continues that story. El Topo abandons his first born son, Cain, and yet had another, Abel, sowing the seeds for this brilliantly drawn new work. Fueled by resentment, and unable to kill his saintly father, the already cursed Cain plans to murder his half-brother, in a tale of magic and mayhem. Violence, nudity.
First of at least two new graphic novels.
Legendary filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky created the first film but could never find a producer for this sequel...so in 2015 he finally found an artist who perfectly captures his cinematic sequences and fine detail, in virtuoso illustrator José Ladrönn. Together, these creators deliver an allegorical and surrealist western where the genre is at the service of deeper philosophical and spiritual considerations.
It's gritty and brutal, and yet the artwork here is pure delight, something we'd expect to see from Jim Steranko or Russ Heath. It's really, really amazing. -Bud
Jodorosky points out in his all-new introduction how he designed this specifically to be cinematic, with wide panoramic panels interspersed with dynamic closeups and moving viewpoints. Look carefully at the scans we have chosen here and you will see what I mean. The story is strange and mystical and certainly not anyone's standard western.
“Oh, father, I cannot kill you, but I can kill your son . . .”
