- Full Description
The Man of Tomorrow aids in a government housing project, gets tricked by the Prankster, matches wits with the Thinker, solves a series of house robberies and much, much more! The original adventures of the Man of Steel from the 1940s, some collected for the first time--and all in a massive 760-page hardcover! Here we still have a more earth-bound Superman. He still battles social injustice and political corruption, fighting for the common man. And of course, there's wartime work to do and those wonderful wartime covers are here!
Superman is the lone crusader for justice, using force when persuation fails, while mild-manner Clark Kent is becoming more and more a focus for Lois Lane's suspicions that he's really Superman. New introduction by Roy Thomas.
Other contributing artists include Stan Kaye, Don Cameron, George Roussos, Wayne Boring (quite a few stories), Sam Citron and others. Jack Burnley's work is always a stand-out here. His Starman in Adventure Comics was a high point of the Golden Age. The powers at DC recognized his talent, and soon had him drawing both covers and stories for their #1 selling hero. Stan Kaye was his inker. Burnley is responsible for many of the most iconic, beloved covers from this era. His covers from World's Finest, which co-starred Batman and Robin, are always classic, and they are of course included here.
Stories also include "King of the Comic Books," "Stand-In for Hercules," "The Mysterious Mr. Mxyztplk" and "The Return of Mr. Mxyztplk," "The Golden Fleece," "Fairyland Island," "Superman's Search for Clark Kent," "The Wizard of Wishes," "Superman versus Superman," and "Superman Takes a Holiday." Fun stuff!!
This is classic Superman, much of it from the war years with great covers and superior artwork.
