- Full Description
A brilliant concoction of movie posters, stills, book & pulp covers, fantastic art and incredible timelines. Companion to and same format as Astounding Illustrated History of Science Fiction. Roots in Gothic literature move into the 20th century, movies of Peter Jackson, streaming TV series such as Grimm, and the fantasy of Neil Gaiman. From the wellspring of Frankenstein, Germanic fairy tales, and heroic myths discover the path through the 1930s pulps; the schlock horror of early modern movies, the invention of High Fantasy by Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
The pulp magazine powerhouse Weird Tales gets excellent coverage, along with Robert E. Howard's sword and sorcery archetype Conan through the decades.
Profusely illustrated in an oversized format. They've done a fine job of selecting good book covers, pulps, excellent cast shots from the television series, scenes from films, candid shots of creators, from writers to directors. Chapter by chapter, you get the highlights of sci-fi from its very beginnings in the 19th century, through our formative years, and up to the present.
Eight chapters. The first is "Advent of Modern Fantasy" looking at 1595-1922. "With the Immortals" covers 1923-45. "Inklings of Other Worlds" 1946-59. "On the Brink of Evolution" 1960-79. "The Battle Between Light & Dark" 1980-89. "A Flourishing of the Genres" 1990-200, and two more taking us into 2020 and the future.
Quite well done. From British bargain-priced publisher Flame Tree, who produce excellent art books in all genres.
