Measuring around 4 inches square and packed with 400+ pages, Big Little Books (and their many cousins and variants) have entertained children since 1932 with their stories and pictures starring popular comic characters. Here are over 1300 of them, each pictured in full color and briefly annotated. Plus an overall history and a closer look at all the major characters and genres.
This is packed with all the great characters: Mickey Mouse, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Dick Tracy, The Phantom, Donald Duck, and even super-heroes like Batman, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and Aquaman. Not to mention Tarzan, The Shadow, The Green Hornet, Betty Boop, Krazy Kat, Terry and the Pirates, Jungle Jim, Li'l Abner, etc.
Today BLBs are surprisingly inexpensive, particularly compared with comic books. Prices have actually been dropping in recent years. I consider it a fun and inexpensive passion to pursue--I have several hundred in my own collection. --Bud
Use this like the Gerber Photo-Journal Guide it is patterned after, to find the best covers or just learn more. Or just prowl the pages of cool images of comic strip characters and film stars (there were lots of film-related BLBs with movie photos inside).
THE book on this is The Golden Age of Big Little Books: Revised Edition, which we also handle. However, that covers titles only up to 1938. This offers far less individual information, but it does picture and briefly notate almost every book from 1932 to 2004. It includes Better Little Books, Dime Action Books, Pop-Ups, and Penny Books. All titles are presented in a unique three-angle view that showcases the vibrant artwork and distinctive designs on the front, back and spine of every volume.
This also includes an illustrated guide to grading BLBs, a wealth of trivia tidbits and a BLB market report for 2004.
