Unsigned regular edition. Twenty-two years ago, artist Charles Vess teamed up with an all-star ensemble of ground-breaking and award winning writers including Neil Gaiman (Sandman), Jane Yolen (Lost Girls), Sharyn McCrumb (The Ballad of Frankie Silver), and Jeff Smith (Bone) to produce The Book of Ballads – which re-imagined the greatest English, Irish, and Scottish folktales in sequential art. From the original art, here is that work--plus 50 pages of new material, scripts, thumbnails, original sketches and much more.
These are complete stories, wonderful fantasy works with demons, fairies, elder gods, dark riders, beautiful ladies... All the elements of British myths and legends, including hints of Lord of the Rings and famous characters of song and legend, like Tam Lin, Barbara Allen, Thomas the Rhymer, Twa Corbies, The False Knight, The Black Fox, The Three Lovers, and The Great Selchie of Sule Skerry. Thirteen fine stories in all, superbly drawn by one of the finest fantasy illustrators today.
Titan Comics has produced their first "Artist's Edition," a special, oversized hardcover in a glorious 10x15 format so fans can enjoy the legendary collection from a modern master in an all-new way, printed the same size as his original pages and drawings. Plus Charles Vess’ original thumbnails and story notes are also included. An introduction by Charles himself narrates the road to this volume, beginning way back in 1970 in a small record shop!
From Neil Gaiman’s retelling of “The False Knight on the Road,” to Jeff Smith’s “The Galtee Farmer,” and Jane Yolen’s “King Henry,” Charles Vess’ Book of Ballads brought new visions of the classic folktales from the brightest New York Times bestsellers, award winners, and masters of science fiction and fantasy together with stunning art from Vess.
Charles Vess's recent releases include Seven Wild Sisters and NYT bestsellers Blueberry Girl and Instructions (with Neil Gaiman). He has won the World Fantasy Award twice, the Chesley Award, and this, his Ballads series, won him the prestigious Eisner award.
This is oversized but smaller than the Artist Edtiions you may be used to, because Charles works much closer to reproduction size, about one and half times larger. That also keeps the price lower than those other collections.
