- Full Description
For the first time under one cover, all three tales from the very rare pulp title Stories of Sheena, Queen of the Jungle as well as the story from the final issue of Jungle Stories! All the type has been reset and includes an introduction by Clark J. Holloway. Sheena was giant in the comics, lasting 165 issues in Jumbo, 18 issues of her own title, then on to television and film. But in the pulps? This is it, the entirety of her appearances in pulp fiction!
From pulp and comics historian Michelle Nolan: " There is no question who was queen of the jungle girls as well as queen of the jungle -- Sheena! Although there were a few well-known jungle girls -- Nyoka, Rulah and so on -- no other jungle girl ever had a career in both the comics and television (and later, the movies). In the pulps, Sheena appeared in only one issue of her own title -- this 1951 one-shot -- and in the last issue of Jungle Stories in 1954, in Fiction House's dying days. But very few female characters did well in the garish days of the pulps, in part because women tended to buy primarily the love pulps and the science fiction magazines."
Publisher Fiction House had a long run of pulp titles that paralleled the same titles they published in the comics: Jungle, Planet, and Wings were all highly successful pulp titles that ran from the 1930s or 1940s into the sixties. But in Jungle Stories, Kaanga was the star, with his beautiful girlfriend in her own animal skins...for some reason, the publishers didn't think a jungle heroine could make the grade, and their one try at giving Sheena her own title may have been too litttle, too late.
These stories are from those lone adventures in 1951 and 1954, when pulps were soon going to be history, eclipsed by paperbacks and magazines.
