- Full Description
A childhood comic book fan turned comic book retailer, the author soon discovered the prevalence of scams in the world of comics collecting. This book is his tutorial on how to collect wisely and reduce risks. Drawing on skills learned from 20 years with the San Diego Police Department and as a Comic-Con attendee since 1970, he covers in detail the history and culture of collecting comic books and describes the pitfalls, including common deceptions of grading, pricing, as well as theft, and mail and insurance fraud.
Jamie is well known to Comic-Con attendees and to San Diego comic fans, having operated Southern California Comics for more than twenty years. He's one of the vets, and also an adviser to the Overstreet Price Guide. I haven't read this yet but am looking forward to it eagerly. Even more so since I read Jamie's Market Report in the new 2018 Overstreet--it was, for me, the very best among all the dozens of reports. He did a perfect job of summing up the ups and downs over the last few years of the comic publishers and their "events" and relaunches.
He's also a big name in Golden and Silver Age comics, which is where much of this book comes into play, recounting each of the ages, from Platinum, Gold, Atomic, Silver, Bronze. Also Pedigree Comics, Third-Party Grading. Includes a full, lengthy index and a good bibliography. I'm sure that like his Market Reports, it's filled with interesting anecdotes about finding collections and maneuvering the complex world of being a comics dealer in this day and age...
From Nolan's Foreword: "You are about to read a unique book by a unique author. Jamie Newbold is the only known person with two decades of experience as a full-fledged police officer followed by two decades as the owner of a full-service comic book store.
"Jamie has mixed commercial success with a wacky sense of humor, such as displays at his stores of the most beat-up comics he has ever been offered...”
