While best known for his comedies of the 1890s, including The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde was a master of many forms. This grand facsimile reproduction of a rare 1910 edition includes five of his very best fairy tales: "The Happy Prince," "The Nightingale and the Rose," "The Selfish Giant," "The Devoted Friend," and "The Remarkable Rocket." Charles Robinson, one of the most successful artists of the Golden Age, enhances the text with 12 remarkable full-color plates and scores of line drawings: decorated initial caps, illustrated vignettes, and other embellishments.

This was Wilde's first collection of fairy tales, published in 1888. But during the Golden Age of Illustration, many books like this were turned into fancy new editions with extra color and black and white plates by the leading illustrators of the day. This is one of them, by the brother of W. Heath Robinson. Charles was a brilliant illustrator, offering exotic glimpses into fairy tales, with fairy princesses, brooding mysterious characters and more. His illustration of the Snow Queen is a classic, often reprinted in collections offering the best art of this period. In fact, many of these illustrations have turned up in "best of" collections, even though this might be considered one of his lesser books, since Wilde isn't instantly known for his fairy tales.

But it's a goodie and worth your attention. Done as a facsimile of the original edition, this is beautifully bound in green cloth, with gilt titles on the cover and spine, and a special onlaid cover plate in full color. Also includes the original endpapers. This is illustrated on nearly every page with wonderful vignettes and designs. It's always been one of my favorite color Charles Robinson books.
