- Full Description
Six pages of work for each of the 100 best of today's artists. For the last ten years, the renowned Steven Heller and Julius Wiedemann have traced the latest developments in illustration across the globe―and here they reveal diversity, intensity, comedy, vivacity, and exceptionality. From veteran artists like Brad Holland, who revolutionized illustrative content in the 1970s, to up-and-coming stars like Robin Eisenberg, with her pastel-skinned alien belles, cruising in spaceships on indie-rock album covers.
Other names we recognize include Ralph Steadman, Tara McPherson, Seymour Chwast and Sue Coe, but I admit everyone else here is entirely new to me. There's a bio on each artist and they represent every possible style, from all over the world. For instance, I like teh sci-fi work of Christi Dutoit from South Africa, and Sao Paulo film poster artist whose realistic style reminds me of Japanese work, Kako.
From China comes Victo Ngai, whose complex, detailed fantasy work is simply impossible to describe. But I like it, each piece should be a huge poster. And I also really like Armando Veve from here in the U.S., inspired to Escher and Fritz Kahn--more superb fantasy work, bursting with detail and telling a story from every corner.
Not every style will be to everyone's taste, but there is plenty here to dig into and enjoy. This is the cutting edge of illustration.
The 100 artists in this collection are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, but they represent a compelling snapshot of the styles, techniques, and use of color by artists across the world. We dare you to pick your favorites.
There were extraordinary eras before mass media changed our viewing habits, back in the day when illustration was the primary means of illuminating the word on paper, to today when we get our words and images on screens as small as a watch face. And in this environment, today’s designers and artists are holding their own brilliantly. Illustration is more free and varied than ever, and it is ubiquitous in all kinds of media from paper to screen, books, packages, clothing, cars, and restaurants.
