The Lost World is the first and best of Arthur Conan Doyle's five stories about the eccentric paleontologist Professor Challenger. Doyle, using his Maple White alias, provides artwork as well. A Calla Edition, originally published by The Strand Magazine, London, 1912.

In some ways this is a companion to Calla's earlier new edition of War of the Worlds, illustrated by Warwick Goble. Both books are entirely new and original, collecting for the very first time the illustrations which only appeared in the original serialized magazine appearances. War of the Worlds has been one of their most successful books for that reason and because it's also a classic of science fiction. I think the same points apply to this new book. The Lost World has long been a classic of fantasy literature. It was also illustrated by the fine illustrator Joseph Clement Coll.

Illustrator Harry Rountree is far better known for his anthropomorphic animals--rabbits, bears, all manner of creatures that populated his stories, novels, advertisements, and far more. Artist William Stout is a big Rountree fan and compiled a first attempt at a bibliography of his work. More recently, IBIS (The Imagtinative Book Illustration Society) has compiled a long biblilography over several issues of their periodical. I collect his work. This is early and quite different from his typical style, but the talent clearly shows through and it's powerful work. Rountree also illustrated Alice in Wonderland, also available in facsimile from Calla and ourselves.
