- Full Description
Abbey's comical masterpiece, featuring for the first time all of R. Crumb's artwork drawn for the book and calendar. Also includes the previously deleted chapter, "Seldom Seen at Home." This classic of revolutionary fiction tells the story of George Washington Hayduke III and his gang of ecological activists running amok in the Southwestern desert. From 1975, this was probably the inspiration for the creation of the environmental group, Earth First. Illustrated color jacket and dozens of b&w illustrations by Crumb.
Edward Abbey loved the Utah desert area and wrote about it frequently in his beloved books. Here he set off on a gonzo sidetrip, perhaps even inspired by Hunter Thompson and his whacked out journalism. In a thinly veiled work of fiction, a group of hardcore environmentalists do their utmost to stop corporate greed, uncaring land development, and ecological disaster of dams on wild rivers.
R. Crumb could identify with the wacko characters like Hayduke, and was enlisted to provide illustrations for what is now a classic of hip literature. Here is the entire story in hardcover, complete with extra artwork not included in earlier editions.
Published by our good friend Ken Sanders, formerly of Cosmic Aeroplane Comics, back when he first met Crumb, and lately of Ken Sanders Rare Books in Salt Lake City. Ken appears frequently on Antiques Roadshow and at rare book fairs around the country. Ken's imprint Dream Garden Press started life doing posters of J.R.R. Tolkien themes, went on to do calendars of desert photography including several years of Edward Abbey work, and this book, mostly in print since 1985. New 2017 edition.
