The daily version of The Phantom ran a separate storyline from the Sundays--until the "Fathers and Sons" storyline that leads off this volume. Starting with that story, which began on February 21, 1949 and ending with "The Ape Idol of the Durugu," concluding on May 6, 1950, the continuities ran together and together they are in this volume, Sundays in full color.

In this volume are three complete continuities collected for the first time in their entirety: "Fathers and Sons," "The Flirtatious Princess," and "The Thuggees"), with a comprehensive essay and lots of introductory documentary materials.

"The Flirtatious Princess" is a lot of fun, as a beauty gets herself entangled with The Phantom and does her best to become his wife, even getting the support of the jungle natives and the Phantom legend itself, since the title is supposed to pass down from father to son. The Phantom, gently at first, tries to convince her he already has a girlfriend, Diana, but she's 3000 miles away and this blonde temptress won't take no for an answer.

Referred to by comic strip historian Maurice Horn as the "granddaddy of all costumed superheroes," The Phantom was created in 1936 by Lee Falk with artwork by Ray Moore.
