The 1940s ushered in an era of musical experimentation and innovation at Disney. Artists from all over the world flocked to California to be part of the magic, and their styles influenced such classics as Dumbo and Bambi as well as setting the stage for the masterpieces that followed such as Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. Hundreds of enchanting images—from early sketches to polished concepts for iconic features—by five exceptional artists who shaped the style of the Studio's animation during this period of unbridled creativity.
With evocative descriptions and excerpts from the artists' journals and autobiographies, this magnificent collection offers a rare look at the visionaries who breathed life into some of the most beloved films of our time. All of the five artists noted have an entire chapter devoted to their work, so finally you can see exactly what their influences were, what scenes are directly inspired by them, what backgrounds and characters are undeniably their creations.
Art Scott was a major book and magazine illustrator outside of Disney, and not a name that leaps to mind for his animation work. Gustaf Tenggren is also a long-time book illustrator, best known for his work in Fantasia on the Night On Bald Mountain sequence...but here you will find all the other key scenes and pieces he did for other films as well. And on it goes, with superlative work by Holland, Retta Scott and David Hall.
David Hall's work on Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and Bambi is simply gorgeous---here are pictures not FROM the films but that inspired them, with a playfulness and freshness that we rarely are treated to discovering. Brilliant, brillant work. And the entire book is like this! I'm not a hardcore Disney fanatic, but I've collected and looked at many books over the years, and still this artwork that Didier has unearthed is mostly new and fresh to me, like another look at worlds we thought we knew but now can discover again from a different perspective.
Didier Ghez is the author of Disney's Grand Tour, Disneyland Paris, and They Drew as They Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney's Golden Age: The 1930s. He lives in Florida.
The introduction is from John Musker, a 38-year veteran of Walt Disney feature animation. Among the films he co-wrote and directed with Ron Clements are The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Treasure Planet, The Princess and the Frog, and the upcoming Moana. He lives in Los Angeles.
