- Full Description
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the creative team that sparked the Marvel revolution, set off on Asgardian adventures featuring the fight-to-end-all-fights between Thor and the Incredible Hulk; the return of the Grey Gargoyle; the debut of the Absorbing Man and the unstoppable Destroyer; Thor and Loki's exile to Skornheim; and the introduction of Hercules and the Greek gods! It all leads to an epic adventure that pits Thor against Hercules and concludes in the depths of Pluto's Underworld.
This is the prime period for Thor, when Kirby and Stan were doing their finest work. Vince Colletta with his soft, fine linework also turned out to be the perfect inker for Kirby. Fans like myself find this to be the ultimate in Thor's vintage adventures. And honestly, it is some of the best material Marvel was doing at the time. Involving the entire pantheon of Norse Gods, picturing the legendary Valhalla and the Rainbow Bridge, was some of Jack's finest creative work and Stan also was obviously giving it his best.
Includes a bonus section with original artwork in black and white, and paintings that were done for previous collections by Dean White and Richard Isanove, based on the original Kirby artwork. Also includes inking by Frank Giacoia and Chic Stone..
The 1965 Journey Into Mystery/Thor Annual is also a special treat. This appeared between issues #120 and 121, and back in these days, the feature stories in the annuals were NEW material, as is this one. So here we're treated to the very battle between Thor and Hercules, he of Greek rather than Norse mythology. Also here are pin-up pages and the back-up "Tales of Asgard" feature...all still by Stan and Jack and Vince Colletta. These are also fan favorites.
Collects: Journey Into Mystery (1952) #110-125, Annual (1965) #1, Thor (1966) #126-130, material From Not Brand Echh (1967) #3.
