Peter Driben was one of the most prolific cover artists to work on the risqué "girlie pulp" magazines that flourished in the USA between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s. This meticulously-researched, lavishly-illustrated book is a glorious celebration of his work, and an absolutely essential addition to the bookshelves of anyone with a taste for classic pin-up and magazine cover artwork. Import from England. Silk Stockings, Wink, Movie Humor, High Heel, Bedtime Stories, Pep, Snappy, La Paree, Spicy, Eyeful, Flirt, Whisper...he worked for them all.
While most of this collection features the cover art from his long career, it also includes quite a few pieces from the original paintings themselves, now commanding high prices in the pin-up art market. His long legged, busty ladies delighted in posing in provative positions, with alluring filmy underwear, negligées, swimsuits, garters and stockings. And always in high heels. The magazine themselves are a kick, with goofy features touted on the covers: "Wives in Hock!" "Girl Pirates", "Why I am a Stripper," "Scarlet Port of Sin," "Bitch of Buchwald," "Sinners in Silk " "White Slavery on the High Seas," "I Posed for the Peddlers of Smut," "Why Wives Cheat," "Girl Gangsters of the Waterfront," etc.
A chapter, Just for Laughs, explores his little known humor magazine work. Still featuring sexy ladies on the covers, these nonetheless were more humor than girlie magazines. And guess who one of the major publishers was? None other than Timely, the forerunner of Marvel Comics. Some of the magazine titles in fact were exactly the same as Timely's comics titles: Comedy and Joker to name two. Other Timely titles included Gayety and Snap.
Driben also did Crime and Detective magazines, including some absolutely wonderul covers for Inside Detective, Expose Detective,Special Detective, Detective Year Book. And a surprise, a comic book for for Avon was stolen by another artist from a Driben cover, for the one-shot Molly O'Day, Super Sleuth!
And he did paperback novels, another area I wasn't aware of, mostly in the crime genre. Say Yes to Murder, The Traveling Corpses, Bedroom Eyes, Unwilling Bride and Hard Boiled Mistress. Finally, there is a fascinating section,Is It Driben, in which are included unsigned, unattributed covers of both paperback books and magazines that look to by Driben, but there is no documentation. Again, there is some fun work here that is rarely seen.
The only other book on Driben is one of Taschen's "Tiny" books. This is his first major art book.
