Closeout Price! Book 6 in the series, upon which the film is based. Highly Recommended. By Pierre Christin. Art by J.C. Mézières. A new "Deluxe" hardback edition of the sixth chronological story, one of the earliest to be collected as a graphic novel--and it is the story upon which the new Luc Besson film is based. Tasked with protecting the new ambassador from Earth, Valérian is kidnapped alongside his charge in a lightning commando attack. It’s up to Laureline to slog through the seedy bowels of Central Station, so enormous it's never been completely mapped. She encounters one strange alien race after another in a sometimes surreal, often dangerous, odyssey. A classic in the series.

The most influential French science-fiction comic series of the past 40 years.

The scene of our story is Point Central, a multicultural (meaning, full of aliens) space station that is practically the size of a planet, but even more diverse. It serves as a sort of United Nations to the galaxy, and that is where our story begins.

Jean-Claude Mézières and Pierre Christin created “Valerian” in 1967 after working in the USA together, one as a cowboy, the other a teacher. While “Valerian” is Mézières’ only comic series, he has worked as an illustrator in many other areas, including designs and sets for The Fifth Element, also directed by Luc Besson, and he was awarded the Grand Prix du Festival d’Angoulême in 1984. Christin also works in collaboration with other artists such as Tardi and Bilal and writes novels and film scripts.

We will be stocking more Valerian graphic novels over the next few months, including a series of hardcovers that will collect 34 books at a time into a comlete series. Only the first is out as I write this. Interestingly enough, we first began handling this series way back in the early 1970s, even before they were translated into English. We used to import them from France, along with graphic novels by Moebius and Phillipe Druillet, and they were featured in our earliest catalogs. When they came out in English, we handled them again. And now, forty years later, they are back again timed with the new film by director Luc Besson (The Transporter, Lucy, La Femme Nikita, Hitman, Taken, District 13), one of my favorite directors. His Fifth Element is a classic, but just one of many.
