In time for Luc Besson’s new film, here’s the complete collection of Valerian and Laureline’s adventures in English at last – including one unpublished volume, a longer cut of another, a new interview and lots of details on the collaboration between the director and the authors! Contains books 1 and 2 of the series: The City of Shifting Waters – in its original two parts, 9 pages longer format; The Empire of a Thousand Planets; Book 0, Bad Dreams, translated into English for the first time: and the very first adventures of our two heroes, published after City and retroactively numbered.

Finally, linking the volumes of this collection together, a long, exclusive interview with the authors and director Luc Besson is illustrated with new art as well as numerous sketches, studies and photographs of Besson and the creators, from the latter’s upcoming big-screen adaptation. A first class collection all the way, even if you already have the original graphic novels (we handled each one as it appeared back in the 1970s, first in the original French, then in English translations).

The interview with Besson, Mezieres and Christin (part 1) is here, conducted exclusively for this edition. It includes special art from the film, including the spectacular "blue world" piece that we've scanned here. Then writer Stan Barets talks about the origins of the series: "You are holding in your hands one of the best comics of all times...In its time, Valerian was a ground-breaking series. It's the original achetype from which everything flows."

Each story in the book is also put in context--in all, we have 15 pages of artwork, interviews, explanations and photos to supplement these first novels.

From Luc Besson himself: "Valerian on the big screen? I blame it all on Jean-Claude Méziéres and Pierre Christin! When I was ten, every week I'd read the adventures of Valerian in Pilote...and I have to confess that I was very much in love with Laureline, even though I quite liked Valerian. It'd be great if the film could make as strong and long-lasting an impression on its viewers."

Through its creativity and daring, the series quickly became the definitive reference for all readers of science fiction bandes dissinées.

Besson is the director of Lucy, The Fifth Element (which used the work of Moebius), The Transporter and other fine action and fantasy films.
