Published by Faerie Magazine, a lush, 108-page compilation of poems, short stories and myths, all accompanied by illustrations by Charles Vess. New introduction from his collaborator Charles de Lint and text from Gaiman and Le Guin, as well as Terri Windling, Jane Yolen, Theodora Goss, Ari Berk and others. A visual treat of both new and some classic artwork, featuring fairies, elves, and myths. Charles himself writes AND illustrates "The Getting of Excalibur" and "Into the Wood."
Charles also contributes "Which Wolf," a traditional Native American story, Neil Gaiman pens "Witch Work," Delia Sherman writes "The Crone." Also an afterword by Charles. Additional authors include Gregory Maguire, Alice Hoffman, and John Matthews.
We're very excited about this new collection, and we are life-long fans of the fantasy artwork of Charles Vess. His best known work today would have to be the Stardust graphic novel written by Neil Gaiman, but he has been involved in so much more. Most recently, his Cats of Tanglewood Forest and Seven Wild Sisters, both written by Charles De Lint, have been extremely popular--for all ages--and have gone through multiple printings as well as hardcover and softcover editions.
Charles' style has its roots in the Golden Age of Illustration, particularly the work of Arthur Rackham. Their gnarled, magnificent trees and deep, mysterious forests have much in common. And they both created lovely fairy worlds of tiny winged creatures, of trolls and gnomes and strange little creatures, all quietly inhabiting lost corners of our own world. But Charles has taken those traditions begun by Rackham and modernized them, creating an entirely new and rich world of fantasy and fairy tale, as well as heroic and even superhero work, as he cut his teeth on works like Spider-Man: Spirits of the Earth and The Sandman by Neil Gaiman.
Includes both classic earlier work and new pieces, some possibly done for this edition. His last art book collection was the 2011 Drawing Down the Moon, which remains available. Includes a handsome fold-out page of "The Night Journey" with text by Terri Windling.
