- Full Description
Glorious full-color illustrations grace every page of this charming storybook by a beloved Victorian-era artist. A prominent member of the Arts and Crafts movement, Walter Crane was among the most popular and influential creators of children's books in his day. This original compilation unites the best folktales from Crane's Toy Books, first published as a colorful series of individual volumes and today hugely collectible and quite scarce.
Bound in pure red cloth, with a color plate inset into the cover, the spine text embossed in white, and full color pictorial endpapers.
Crane was one of the most important artists to embrace the new art possibilities of the Aesthetic Movement, strongly influenced by Japanese design and the foundation for Art Nouveau. His design and decorative sense was unequaled, and here we see some of his finest examples. Here are short kid-sized adaptations, more about the pictures than the brief text, of twelve classics: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots, Valentine and Orson, Bluebeard, Mother Hubbard, The Three Bears, Jack and the Beanstalk and other favorites.
These combine Crane's imaginative woodblock illustrations--engraved and printed (originally) in color by the highly important Edmund Evans, who was a pioneer of early color printing and the finest practitioner at this point. Each full page illustration comes with an inset of rhyming text. The effect suggests an early version of the graphic novel, ideal for bedtime storytelling.
This beautiful new edition will delight both parents and children and is quite reasonably priced for such a high quality edition.
Note: Bump to corner.
