Oddball, kitschy, crazy, romance comics from the 1950s and '60s sure to blow your mind and/or bust your gut with laughter! More classics culled by editor Craig Yoe: "I Joined a Teenage Sex Club," "Savage Love," "Men Were My Business," "Cracked Up," "Black Marketeer," "Call Me Wicked," "I Married A Maniac," "He Called Me Jail Bait," plus a sordid story of Clown Fetish: "The Love She Didn't Want!" and many more bizarro comics!
A fun selection of covers show just how salacious sounding these stories could be, with wonderful art by Lee Elias, Ray Orsin, Wildey, Al Fago and others.
Introduction by Graphic Novels Librarian, Columbia University, Karen Green. "Romance comics--a genre essentially invented by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby with the 1947 title Young Romance...provided an endless supply of heteronormative, bourgeois values, extolling consumerism and good grooming, and quelling any unfortunate impulses towards careerism, independence, or (Heaven forfend) promiscuity. For roughly three decades, these first-person narratives wove a net that reinforced the traditional social roles of the sexes."
"Good girls were rewarded and bad girls--as long as they were really bad girls, and not just good girls whose foot had slipped momentarily from the straight and narrow--were punished. And what was their punishment? To lose out on love...Mr. Right would never again look upon these wretched women."
Well, we'd make an exception to Karen's general theme with the wonderful stories by Dana Dutch and Matt Baker that have been reprinted elsewhere (some are currently available in the new Canton Street Replica Editions like Teen-Age Romances and Pictorial Confessions). But in general she's 100% right, and so Craig Yoë has gone out and uncovered the weirdest and most eye-opening of these wanna-be love fests.
This is the third collection in Yoë Books' ongoing series.
