An interesting, dynamic series. The art by Rich Larson is solid while not exciting, but the work by Dell Barras and Tim Burgard is very good. Dell is a Filipino artist and shows the influenced of Nestor Redondo, which works very well here. His women are very sensuous, his action scenes good, his characters well-defined.

Norman Greyfogle also draws a run of these stories, inked by John Nyberg.

This interesting heroine began her her comics career as an early Independent title, published by then-comics distributor Capital Comics, aka Capital Distribution, who is the same publisher that kicked off Nexus. Then upstart publisher First Comics, who also brought to comics Grimjack and American Flagg by Howard Chaykin, took the title over, and it ran for a very successful 37 issues, from 1986 to 1990.

This collects Capital's Whisper #1, 2, Whisper Special #1, her adventures from the First Comics anthology title First Adventures #1-5, and finally First Comics' first six issues of Whisper Volume 2. We expect the this series to run one or two more volumes, thus collecting the rest of the First Comics run.

Here's a good rundown on this heroine, which I've slightly adapted, from Writeups.org:

She was born Alexis Devin, raised in Japan, where Hatsumi Jiro, her grandfather, trained her in aikido and infiltration. Jiro was Yakuza, and had some long-term projects for Alex.

As a gaijin with poor social skills Alex was ostracized, and tried to defend herself against hostile Japanese schoolgirls. She later was sent back to America, where she didn’t fit in much better.;She managed to get a little life, but still felt hollow inside. She then got dragged into her father and her grandfather’s criminal activities, and became Whisper.

She thought that putting on a costume would make her a superhero, but what it really made her was a target. Her grandfather died. Her father was rendered a vegetable, and later died. Kirk, her boyfriend and the only person she ever loved, was killed by the CIA due to his anarchist activities (hacking, nuclear research and so on).

After having spent years fighting, escaping death and moving among spooks, killers, criminals and corrupt civil servants, Diane became quite efficient at crimefighting. While she’s not a superhero, she has a cause and fights on.
