All-new and Exceptiional. Our Highest Recommendation. By Dr Kara Lysandra Ross and Frederick C. Ross. William Bouguereau was the most popular artist in nineteenth-century France but along with artists like Maxfield Parrish and Alma Tadema, he’s also very well known today. Or at least his images are. But here is a chance to delve deeper into his life and his prolific works. This book is an exploration of the four genres most prevalent throughout Bouguereau's career: mythological works, religious works, peasants, and portraits. One new takeaway for me is how he concentrated on the subtleties of capturing human emotion in heads and hands, something at which he was a consummate master. Moderate nudity.

This is a primary factor in what makes his works, in general, so compelling. Although each section of the book discusses the importance of the individual genera within Bouguereau's oeuvre, and includes painting analyses to highlight his most important works, this book is a showcase of the master's lifetime achievement through beautifully illustrated full-page plates of over 120 of his greatest masterpieces.

His images of angels, cupids, of Psyche and satyrs and nymphs are not only amazing, they are timeless. Just look at the cover of this edition. The children’s outfits are certainly of a different time, but not their faces and expressions...thiese could well be any child of today.

He was also master of the human figure, obviously taking delight in the nude female form. During his age the contemporary nude was frowned on, but as long as the subject was mythological, artists like Bouguereau could do whatever they wished. Like Norman Lindsay, he often peopled his images with dozens of nude figures, and every one is picture perfect.

An aside: I just attended the "Keepers of the Flame" exhibit at the Norman Rockwell Museum in August. This superlative offering starts with artists we all know, Maxfield Parrish, N.C. Wyeth, and Norman Rockwell, and traces their TEACHERS and therefore their inspiration and technique, back through into the early 1800s. And who should be a part of this? Bouguereau, of course. And also his contemporary Leon Gerome and his Paris Salon, where so many artists studied in the late 1800s.—Bud
