From the co-editor of Spectrum, a spotlight on women creators of fantastic art (traditionally seen as a largely male domain, though women have always been active participants) from Kewpie creator Rose O'Neill and pulp illustrator Margaret Brundage to Spectrum Grand Masters Diane Dillon and Kinuko Y. Craft.

Increasingly, women are impacting contemporary fantastic art and inspiring new generations of illustrators, designers, sculptors, and painters. Women of Wonder reflects the expanding numbers of women artists featured in Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art. This full-color collection, complete with artist statements and photos, celebrates their presence and influence, accompanied by a superb, choice full-page illustration (usually of a fantasy woman).

This examines contemporary illustrators as well as the above pioneers. Included are children's artist Ruth Sanderson, Claire Wendling, Teryl Whitlach, a favorite of ours, Shelly Wan, Ilene Meyer, another favorite Echo Chernik (shown here), a new discovery for us, L.D. Austin (shown here), and the fine Kei Acedera (also shown here).

There is so much wonderful material here, I only wish I could name many more artists and show lots more scans to convey what a fine collection this is. In addition to a plethora of contemporary artists, many new to me, this also includes artwork and coverage of some of the finest names, recent and classic: Lisbeth Zwerger, Sulamith Wulfing, Marie Severin, Rowena, another personal favorite, Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale (last of the Pre-Raphaelite illustrators), Howard Pyle student Elizabeth Shippin Green et al.

Women of Wonder is a beautiful celebration of the imagination and of the exemplary creators . . . who just happen to be women.
